Tacoma: Nominations Open for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Awards

~ The City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC) has announced that they are now accepting nominations for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in January 2026. The committee is seeking to honor community members who have made significant contributions through their service to the Tacoma community.

Nominations are open for two categories: the Lifetime Service Award, which is open to groups, organizations, and individuals, and the Emerging Leader Award, which is open to individuals. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Interested parties can find the nomination application on the CERC website.

The honorees will be recognized for their meaningful contributions in areas such as human rights efforts, commitment to education, and sharing of skills. They will also embody Dr. King's teachings and actions by representing people of all colors in the pursuit of hope, healing, and sustainable peace.

Past honorees include notable individuals such as Brian Gatewood Sr., Shawn Durnen, Gloria Joy Kazuko Muhammad, Lisa Mathusz, Pastor Gregory Christopher, and former U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer. These individuals have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and advocacy that align with Dr. King's vision of hope, justice, and opportunity for all.

In addition to honoring award recipients, the annual Celebration will feature live performances and a community outreach fair. It will also provide an opportunity for neighbors, civic leaders, and local organizations to come together in celebration. The 2025 program will be filmed by TV Tacoma and can be viewed online.

The CERC is responsible for selecting honorees to receive awards and overseeing the production of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The event will take place at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center located at 1500 Commerce Street.
