~ Spokane, WA - The City of Spokane Fire Department, in collaboration with SAFE Kids Spokane, the Downtown Spokane Partnership, River Park Square, and Nom Nom, is excited to announce the annual Kids Junior Fire Academy. This free and family-friendly event will take place at River Park Square and on Post Street in downtown Spokane on Saturday, September 13th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

According to Jamie McIntyre, Community Risk Reduction Manager for the Spokane Fire Department, this event is a dream come true for kids who aspire to become firefighters. "We all have that special kid in our life who dreams of becoming a firefighter. This is your chance to make their dream come true," stated McIntyre. "Our partners are essential to the success of this event. We're excited that Nom Nom will be joining us again this year, offering a sweet treat for kids as they earn their official Jr Firefighter status," McIntyre continued.

The Kids Junior Fire Academy offers an excellent opportunity for kids and families to experience what it's like to be a firefighter while also learning important safety information. The event is open to "kids" of all ages and will feature various activities such as touring and seeing demonstrations from a fire truck and fire engine, learning about wildfire safety, hands-only CPR training, making fire-themed crafts with Mobius, operating a charged fire hose, taking photos with Sparky the Fire Safety Dog, and much more.

Families are encouraged to keep an eye out for Spokane's Arson Dog, Chardonnay, and her partner Deputy Chief Jared Harms from Spokane County Fire District #4. They will be showcasing Chardonnay's skills with live demonstrations throughout the event. Additionally, kids can collect stamps at each activity and receive a Jr. Firefighter certificate along with a sweet treat from Nom Nom.

For those looking for an extra challenge, there will be an optional scavenger hunt in partnership with PBS. Participants will visit six stations around the Jr Fire Academy events to solve a fire safety riddle. Completed worksheets can be shown to receive a prize.

Media are welcome to attend the event for behind-the-scenes coverage or capture the event on the day-of. For media inquiries, please contact Jamie McIntyre, SFD Community Risk Reduction Manager at 509.435.7058.
