~ A new wildland fire fuels reduction project is set to begin on October 1, 2025, and is expected to be completed by December 30, 2025. However, there is a possibility that the project may extend into February 2026. The project will cover an area of approximately 160-200 acres and will require up to seven days of work per week, depending on crew availability.

The purpose of this project is to reduce the risk of wildfires and improve the overall health of the forest. To achieve this goal, key practices such as thinning conifers smaller than 8 inches in diameter, creating spacing of 12-20 feet between trees, pruning remaining trees up to 10 feet high, and chipping or mulching cut materials will be implemented. It is important for the public to avoid all active work areas and not disturb any ribbons or markers on trees as they are part of the project plan.

While some areas may have thicker layers of wood chips as a result of this project, it is not expected to increase the risk of wildfires. In fact, this project will have numerous benefits for forest health and resiliency. By removing excess vegetation, more water, sunlight, and nutrients will reach the remaining trees. This will make them healthier and more resilient to insects and diseases. Additionally, this work will recreate the natural thinning role of fire which has been suppressed due to past fire control measures and human activity.
