~ Tacoma City Council Member, John Smith, expressed deep disappointment over the recent decision to close the Fred Meyer store on 72nd Street. The store has been a staple in the community for decades and its closure will have a real and personal impact on the neighborhoods it serves. This location is one of six stores across the region facing closure, leaving many residents in Tacoma's Eastside and South End with limited options for accessing groceries.

For those with limited mobility, navigating to a new grocery location will be a significant burden. The closure of a grocery store goes beyond inconvenience; it disrupts access to basic needs, jobs, and a central community hub. As a City Council Member, Smith is committed to proactively addressing issues such as site security and preventing blight.

The City has taken action by forming an interdepartmental team consisting of representatives from Tacoma Fire, Police, and Code Enforcement. This team is working closely with Fred Meyer to ensure that all regulations for securing a vacant property are followed. Fred Meyer has expressed their intention to comply with these codes in order to maintain safety and upkeep of the site throughout its lease.

While the City does not have direct control over privately owned property, they have made Fred Meyer aware of the community's high-level requests for interim uses of the property beyond just retail. This includes ensuring that resident voices are heard during this transition. The Community and Economic Development (CED) team is actively researching potential interim solutions for the site with a focus on restoring food and pharmacy access. These solutions will be presented to Fred Meyer and the property owner, with support from County and State partners if needed.

Beyond addressing immediate concerns, Smith sees this closure as an opportunity to revisit how food access is addressed in Tacoma. He believes that every person in Tacoma deserves access to fresh, healthy food regardless of their location. As Chair of the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health, Smith is working closely with the Director of Public Health to inform the community of grocery stores and other resources they can access. He is also looking into grant and community funding opportunities to combat food deserts in the area, particularly those south of the closed Fred Meyer location. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities in our food system, and Smith believes it is important to reassess and rebuild with resilience and equity in mind.

Fortunately, the Eastside and South End neighborhoods are home to a number of locally owned, small-business grocery stores. These businesses have long served the community with care and commitment, and Smith encourages residents to consider supporting them during this transition.

Smith acknowledges that this is a difficult moment for the neighborhood, but he also sees it as an opportunity for growth. As a resident himself, he understands the impact this closure will have on families and is committed to working together with the community to meet their needs and strengthen local systems. He believes that by working together, no one will be left behind.
