~ As the new school year begins, the Spokane Police Department is urging drivers to be cautious and mindful of their speed while on the road. Sgt. Teresa Fuller, from the Public Information Office, has emphasized the importance of reducing speeds and paying attention while driving, especially in school zones.
To ensure the safety of students, the Spokane Police Traffic Unit will be actively enforcing speed limits around school zones. They will also be on the lookout for distracted drivers and those who disobey bus stop paddles. Additionally, starting Tuesday, school zone photo enforcement cameras will be in operation.
According to a national survey, two-thirds of drivers exceed the posted speed limit in school zones during the 30-minute periods before and after classes. This reckless behavior not only puts children at risk but also comes with severe consequences. In 2024 alone, 221 people lost their lives in Washington due to speed-related crashes, while 16 deaths were caused by distracted driving. In Spokane, over the past five years, more than 20 fatal crashes were attributed to speeding and distracted driving.

Children are particularly vulnerable on the roads as they can be unpredictable. A pedestrian hit by a car traveling at 20 mph has a 90 percent chance of survival, but this drops to just 50 percent at 30 mph. To prevent such tragedies from occurring, it is crucial for drivers to adhere to speed limits and remain focused while behind the wheel.
In addition to drivers' responsibility for road safety, parents also play a vital role in keeping their children safe on their way to school. It is essential for parents to remind their children about road safety rules and ensure they have bright or reflective backpacks and clothing for better visibility. Children should also avoid distractions while walking or biking to school.
For students who take the bus, it is recommended that they remove their backpacks before sitting down so that they are properly seated during travel. Elementary children riding with parents should also be in booster seats until they are 4'9" tall and sit in the back seat until they are 13 years old.
As the new school year begins, it is crucial for everyone to work together to keep our most precious cargo safe. By following speed limits, avoiding distractions, and educating children about road safety, we can ensure a safer community for all. Let's make this school year a safe one for our children.
