~ As the federal government shutdown continues, the community of Tacoma is feeling the impact. From the potential loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to the absence of paychecks for federal workers, residents are facing financial hardships. With no end in sight, local officials are stepping up to provide support and assistance.
The city's mayor expressed deep concern over the effects of the shutdown on Tacoma's community members. He emphasized that while negotiations in Washington D.C. have stalled, it is important for state and local partners to come together and help those in need.
One such effort is being made by Pierce Transit, where all federal employees can ride for free by presenting their government-issued ID. This temporary fare waiver applies to all Pierce Transit services including buses, paratransit, and rideshare.
In addition, Tacoma Public Utilities and the Environmental Services Department are offering a Bill Credit Assistance Plan and a Discount Rate Program to assist those facing financial challenges. Information on how to enroll in these programs can be found on their website.

The Neighborhood and Community Services Department is also taking action by increasing food access for emergency food programs. They are working towards ensuring that all residents have access to nutritious food regardless of their economic status. Community members can find information on nearby food pantries on their website.
To further support those in need, an emergency food drive will be held at the Tacoma Dome Parking Lot A on October 29th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by Eloise's Cooking Pot.
At the state level, Governor Jay Inslee's office has recognized the struggles faced by communities during this time and has provided financial support for local food banks.
While these efforts will not completely eliminate the needs of those affected by the shutdown, they serve as a reminder of how important it is for communities to come together during times of crisis. The mayor expressed gratitude towards local businesses and community members who have already taken action to support each other. He also urged residents to continue getting involved through volunteerism, donations, and food contributions.
In Tacoma, the community has always thrived when they join forces and support each other. There are numerous organizations that are in need of assistance right now, and it is crucial for everyone to do their part in ensuring that those in need do not fall through the cracks during this difficult time.
