~ The Tacoma City Council is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill two positions on the Board of Ethics. This board, which is composed of five regular members, is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints of ethical violations by various city officials and rendering advisory opinions when requested.
According to the press release issued by the City Council, the membership term for these positions is three years and applicants must be residents of Tacoma. The Government Performance and Finance Committee will recommend potential candidates, who will then be appointed by the City Council.
The Board of Ethics plays a crucial role in upholding ethical standards within the city government. They have the authority to investigate complaints against the City Manager, Director of Public Utilities, members of the Public Utility Board, appointed members of other city committees, boards or commissions, and even elected officials. In addition to this, they may also provide advisory opinions upon request and publish formal opinions on matters within their jurisdiction.

The City Council has emphasized its commitment to promoting equity and anti-racism within its organization. As such, they are encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply for these vacancies. This includes BIPOC individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, those with disabilities, seniors, youth, immigrants and refugees.
Applicants who are appointed to these positions will be required to complete training on Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act within 90 days. This training will be provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.
