~ The Spokane Police Department (SPD) has recently launched a new alternative reporting option for survivors of sexual assault. This initiative, called Seek Then Speak, was created by Ending Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) and is now available to support survivors in Washington.

Seek Then Speak offers survivors and their support people a private way to gather helpful information and begin the reporting process to law enforcement if they choose to do so. This new pathway for SPD allows them to adopt the Seek Then Speak reporting option and provide resources specifically within the Spokane community.

The first step, "Seek," allows survivors and their support people to gather information related to medical care, supportive services, and other resources they may need. The second step, "Speak," is a self-guided interview for survivors 18 years and older. This interview gathers critical information while also providing education on why certain information is being asked, how it will be used, and what the survivor's rights are throughout the process.

Once the self-guided interview is complete, it generates a PDF that can be saved for the survivor's records or submitted to law enforcement if they feel ready. It is important to note that Seek Then Speak is designed for use when law enforcement response is not immediately necessary. In cases of imminent danger or urgent medical attention, individuals should still call 911.

According to Officer Daniel Strassenberg from the SPD Public Information Office, this new resource will provide survivors with more control over their reporting process and access to important resources within their community. Seek Then Speak also offers a list of resources specific to Washington state on their website for those outside of Spokane.

While Seek Then Speak is a national resource, it may not have information specific to every local area. However, it serves as an important tool in supporting sexual assault survivors across the United States.
