The Southland Symphony Orchestra proudly launches its 2025–2026 Season with A Musical Mosaic — a vibrant program that celebrates cultural richness, regional identity, and musical innovation. This extraordinary concert highlights works by distinguished composers alongside a World Premiere, offering audiences an unforgettable musical journey through tradition, storytelling, and contemporary expression. Vocal Soloists Julia Hwang, Soprano, and Michal Dawson Connor, join the SSO for this Season Opening Celebration.

This premiere marks the first in an anticipated series of musical storytelling by acclaimed composer Tao Mijares. Be among the first to experience this exciting new addition to the orchestral repertoire!

  • "Declaration and Preamble" – Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann
    A stirring original work grounded in the words of the U.S. Constitution, offering a musical tribute to democracy and a call to unity, justice, and hope.
  • "Estampas Mexicanas" – José Elizondo
    A colorful and evocative suite in which each movement paints vivid musical portraits of Mexican culture — from lively festivals to serene landscapes.
  • "Two Soulful Spirituals" – Arr. Michal Dawson Connor, orchestrated by Sylvia Lee Mann
    Moving new orchestrations of "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and "Michal, Row Your Boat Ashore!", honoring the enduring power of African American spirituals.
  • "Overture to the Song of Hiawatha" – Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
    A lush and noble overture by the Afro-British composer celebrated as the "African Mahler," based on Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha.
