~ Tacoma, WA - The City of Tacoma, Parks Tacoma, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the Port of Tacoma, and the Center for Urban Waters at the University of Washington Tacoma have joined forces to form a regional coalition aimed at improving the ecological health and operational future of Commencement Bay. This partnership recognizes the importance of a resilient natural environment as the foundation for a strong waterfront and has been working together to address severe climate pressures while protecting the bay as an essential economic and cultural anchor.
As part of their efforts, the coalition is inviting community members to an open house during PNW Climate Week. The event will take place on Wednesday, July 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Owen Beach Pavilion in Tacoma. This is a direct opportunity for community members to review draft concepts and provide feedback that will shape the final master plan.
The Commencement Bay Restoration and Resilience Master Plan (CBRRMP) was officially launched in spring 2025 with funding from a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation coastal resilience grant awarded to the City in 2023. In October 2025, a workshop was held to evaluate regional, state, and federal priorities. The project team then compiled localized climate data to gain a better understanding of the shoreline's vulnerability to habitat loss, sea level rise, intensifying storms, and erosion. Using this data analysis as well as initial insights gathered from waterfront property owners in June 2025, the partners have developed preliminary nature-based conceptual designs for priority sites.

The upcoming open house is an important step in evaluating and refining these early designs before the master plan is finalized. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the bay's history, evaluate draft site concepts at interactive stations, and engage in open dialogue with the project team and City staff.
The event is designed to be welcoming and accessible for all community members with activities for all ages including kids' programming. Complimentary food and prizes will also be provided. No registration is required to attend this free event and community members can visit the City's website or email sustainability@tacoma.gov for more information.
The coalition is committed to working together with the community to ensure the long-term health and resilience of Commencement Bay. By coming together and sharing their expertise, these partners are taking a proactive approach to address the impacts of climate change while preserving the bay for future generations.
