~ As the Independence Day holiday approaches, the city of Spokane is preparing for closures and cancellations in observance of the occasion. Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city, announced that the Waste to Energy Facility will be closed on Saturday, July 4. However, due to the holiday falling on a Saturday this year, garbage, recycling, and food & yard waste services will continue as normal. City Hall will also be closed on Friday, July 3.

In addition to these closures, there are several other changes that residents should be aware of. On-street paid parking meters and kiosks will not require payments on Saturday, July 4. However, it is important to note that all parking rules and time limits still apply even when parking is free on holidays.

The Spokane Municipal Court and Community Justice Services will also be closed on Friday, July 3. This includes the suspension of in-person, phone, and online customer service inquiries from Spokane 311 employees. However, residents can still submit requests through Spokane311.org at any time.

Development Services Center employees will also not be available on Friday, July 3. All Spokane Public Library locations will be closed on both Friday and Saturday.

For those looking for activities during the holiday weekend, there are plenty of options available. The Riverfront Summer Carnival presented by ICCU will be open from Wednesday, July 1 through Sunday, July 5. This five-day event promises fun and excitement for all ages. The grand finale of the carnival will be the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration & Spokane Symphony Concert on Saturday.

However, it is important to remember that the sale and use of amateur fireworks is illegal in several areas including Spokane County and its surrounding cities. The City of Spokane Fire Department is reminding residents that fines for fireworks violations can reach up to $536 per infraction. This includes sparklers, which are also considered illegal.

For those looking to dispose of unwanted fireworks, the household hazardous waste area at the Waste to Energy Facility is available at no cost.
