~ Spokane Fire Department Responds to House Fire on South Sherman Street
At 10:39 a.m. this morning, Spokane firefighters were called to 804 South Sherman Street for a reported house fire. According to dispatchers, flames were seen coming from the front of the two-story duplex. The Riverside Neighborhood's Engine 1 arrived on the scene just four minutes later and confirmed that the fire had spread from the first floor to the second story and attic.
As they worked to extinguish the flames, firefighters received an update from dispatchers that there was a high chance of an adult male resident being trapped inside the burning building. Without hesitation, they began a search of the structure while simultaneously fighting the fire.

Their efforts paid off when they discovered an unconscious adult male on the first floor. In less than four minutes after their arrival, firefighters were able to rescue him by cutting through a window sill and removing him from the building. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm as more resources were needed.
The victim was immediately transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in critical condition. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported. It took firefighters just 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, but extensive damage has left the duplex uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Firefighters will remain at the scene for several hours to ensure that all hotspots are fully extinguished. Justin de Ruyter of Spokane Fire has stated that they are committed to keeping residents safe and will continue their efforts in investigating this incident.
