~ The City of Spokane's Water Department has received a significant grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to implement solar infrastructure at their main location on North Foothills Drive at Hamilton. The $2.8 million Clean Energy Community Grant, along with a local match of nearly $200,000, will be used to install parking structures, solar arrays, battery storage, and charging stations as part of ongoing renovations at the department's historic site.
According to Erin Hut, Communications Director for the City of Spokane, this funding will greatly benefit the department's efforts to provide clean drinking water to their customers in an affordable manner. "The City Water Department is excited to use these funds to invest in needed updated infrastructure," Hut stated.
The project has also received praise from Public Works Director Marlene Feist who expressed gratitude towards the state Department of Commerce for recognizing how this initiative will improve the functionality and resilience of the Water Department while also being environmentally friendly. "We are grateful to the state Department of Commerce for seeing how this project will enhance the functionality and resilience of the Water Department in a way that is protective of our environment and our neighbors," Feist said.

Jon Snyder, Director of Transportation and Sustainability for Spokane, also shared his enthusiasm for this development. "This is a meaningful step forward in our city's commitment to sustainability," Snyder stated. He further emphasized that this project aligns with their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefit vulnerable communities. "This is particularly positive given the proximity of the department to schools in an underserved neighborhood, where the benefits of clean air and a healthy environment are especially critical," Snyder added.
The addition of solar infrastructure at the City Water Department's main location is a significant step towards achieving sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact. With this grant funding, Spokane is making strides towards a cleaner and more resilient future.
