~ The Tacoma City Council is currently seeking applicants to fill five positions on the Board of Building Appeals. This announcement was made in a press release on April 28, 2025, by Quyen Thai, the Staff Liaison for the city.
According to the press release, the ideal candidates for these positions must have training and experience in various codes such as Building Code, Residential Code, Mechanical Code, Fire Code, Plumbing Code, Waterfront Structures and Marina Code, Minimum Building and Structures Code, and Energy Code.
The Board of Building Appeals is a quasi-judicial board that consists of seven members. These members are recommended by the Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee and appointed by the City Council.
The duties of this board include reviewing and providing recommendations to the City Council for new editions, amendments, and proposed changes to various codes. They also hold hearings and make decisions on appeals related to orders or determinations made by the Building Official or Fire Chief. Additionally, they hear appeals of findings of fact and orders made by the Hearing Examiner for the Minimum Building and Structures Code.

In line with their commitment to promoting equity and anti-racism within their organization, the City of Tacoma encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply for these vacancies. This includes BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color), LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, seniors, youth, immigrants, and refugees.
Applicants who are appointed will be required to complete trainings on Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General within 90 days of their appointment.
