~ Tacoma, Washington - The City of Tacoma has taken a major step towards promoting clean transportation and climate resilience with the expansion of its public electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the downtown area. This initiative, implemented in partnership with Tacoma Public Utilities and the Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability, has nearly doubled the number of publicly accessible EV chargers in the downtown core.
According to Mayor Victoria Woodards, this expansion is a significant milestone in the city's commitment to clean energy. "Nearly doubling the number of publicly accessible EV chargers in Tacoma's downtown core is a major step forward in our commitment to clean transportation and climate resilience," she stated. "This expansion not only supports our 2030 electrification goals - it also ensures that downtown remains accessible, future-ready, and welcoming to residents and visitors who are making the switch to electric."
The project has added 21 new chargers across seven City-operated parking lots and garages, with two located near I-705 for convenient access. This brings the total number of public EV chargers in downtown Tacoma to 51, including 47 Level 2 chargers and two Level 3 DC fast chargers. Additionally, there are 13 more scheduled to go live soon, strategically placed to provide broader coverage and enhanced convenience for the public.

Council Member Kristina Walker emphasized the importance of this shift towards sustainable transportation options. "By providing more charging options downtown, we are supporting a shift to more sustainable transportation options and helping to make the air we breathe cleaner," she said. "This shift is key to reducing air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels, making Tacoma a healthier place to live, work, and visit."
To celebrate this clean energy milestone, community members are invited to attend a "plugging-in" event on April 22 at 9:15 a.m. at the Tacoma Municipal Lot on 728 Market St. The event will feature two of the newly installed DC fast charging stations.
This vital infrastructure upgrade was made possible through collaborative funding efforts, with significant contributions from the Washington State Department of Commerce, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, and the Washington State Department of Ecology. More information on specific charger locations, types, and availability can be found at cityoftacoma.org/downtowncharging.
