Tacoma: City’s Events and Recognitions Committee Announces the City of Destiny Award Winners

~ The Tacoma City Council and the City's Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC) are gearing up for the annual City of Destiny Awards, where they will honor Tacoma's top volunteers and service providers. The ceremony is set to take place on May 6, 2026, at 7 PM at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall located at 2727 East D Street.

Since 1987, the City of Destiny Awards have been a tradition in recognizing exceptional contributions to the community across various categories. This year's celebration will honor nine individuals and one group who have made a lasting impact through their volunteerism, leadership, and service.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for the Community Showcase, which will feature the organizations connected to the nominees. A reception with complimentary refreshments will also be held starting at 5:30 PM. The recipients of the 2026 City of Destiny Awards have been announced as follows:

- Group Work: Eloise's Cooking Pot

- Environmental Sustainability: Zakiya Nicole from The Chayah Movement

- Disability Advocate: Shatone Martin from Lifting Spirits with Helping Hands

- Economic Development: Lydia Mendez from Little Miss Sweets NYC

- Equity & Empowerment: Lydia Zepeda from Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs

- Lifetime Service: Ernie Ouellette - Daffodil Festival volunteer

- Champion of Peace: Tom Heavey - Greater Tacoma Peace Prize

- Inspire Tacoma: Leo Randolph - Golden Gloves Legend

The CERC, appointed by the City Council, is responsible for organizing and producing the annual City of Destiny Awards, including selecting the recipients.
