Tacoma: City Manager Appoints Tanja Carter as Community & Economic Development Director

~ Tacoma, Washington - City Manager Elizabeth Pauli has announced the appointment of Tanja Carter as the new Community & Economic Development Department Director, effective March 24, 2025. The appointment was confirmed by the City Council.

Carter brings a wealth of experience to her new role, with a background in tourism and hospitality, commercial real estate development, retail, distribution, and international manufacturing. She most recently served as the Economic Development Director for the City of Federal Way and has also worked in economic development for the cities of SeaTac and Auburn.

According to City Manager Pauli, Carter's diverse background and global perspective make her an ideal candidate for the position. "As a trilingual professional with experience living on three continents and working in over 60 countries, Tanja Carter offers a diverse understanding of cultural and economic landscapes," said Pauli. "Her proven track record of success in economic development, program execution, and leadership will be invaluable to our city."

Carter's experience leading teams in developing economic development strategies in diverse regions has honed her ability to tailor solutions to specific cultural and economic needs. She has also been successful in connecting small immigrant-owned businesses with opportunities that support their success.

In addition to her international experience, Carter also brings strong relationships with organizations such as the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and the Washington Economic Development Association (WEDA). She has also worked on nurturing collaborations between jurisdictions through Sister Cities programs.

"I've been so impressed by the incredibly smart and talented people on this team and the amazing work they've already accomplished. I look forward to supporting their continued success and building on these achievements as we work together to serve businesses of all sizes seeking to establish, grow and thrive in Tacoma."

Carter is a native German speaker who is also fluent in English and Spanish. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics and international relations from The American University.

With her extensive experience and diverse background, Carter is well-equipped to lead the Community & Economic Development Department and foster local economic growth in Tacoma. The City of Tacoma is excited to welcome her to the team and looks forward to the positive impact she will have on the community.
