~ On October 7, 2025, the Tacoma City Council unanimously voted to sponsor Trick or Streets, a community event hosted by Safe Streets. This event offers residents the opportunity to close their residential streets to vehicle traffic for free during the weekend of October 31 – November 2, 2025. The aim of Trick or Streets is to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and other fall-themed celebrations.
According to District 1 Council Member John Hines, Halloween should be scary but not dangerous for pedestrians, especially young children. He believes that creative solutions are needed to ensure that the community can come together and celebrate the season in a safe way. Trick or Streets provides an opportunity for more people to create fun and spooky spaces where they can connect with their neighbors and enjoy the holiday without worrying about traffic.
At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker also expressed her support for Trick or Streets, stating that it aims to enhance pedestrian safety during the fall season. She believes that Tacoma has a fantastic fall season and wants residents to be able to enjoy it as safely as possible. Walker commended Safe Streets for making it easy for community members to register for this event and looks forward to seeing all the fun and creative block parties that will take place.
