Statement from Tacoma City Council Members Sandesh Sadalge and Olgy Diaz on Defending Local Control of Law Enforcement

With deployments expanding to more cities, including Portland, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, there is a growing need to reaffirm the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between civilian-led public safety and military action in a democratic society.

In response to this issue, the City of Tacoma has joined an amicus brief in a case that upholds the constitutional right of local and state governments to control their own law enforcement and prevent unauthorized military deployment in their communities. This move has united Tacoma with other municipalities across the nation, such as Seattle, Washington; Iowa City, Iowa; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

According to city officials, this decision was made because fundamental constitutional principles are at stake.
