~ Tacoma, Wash. - As Earth Day approaches, the City of Tacoma and Pierce Conservation District are teaming up to celebrate with a community planting party at the revitalized McKinley Overlook on April 19. The event, which will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM, invites members of the public to join in on the volunteer-driven effort to enhance the urban wildlife habitat and create a vibrant green space for the community to enjoy.
Located at East 32nd Street and East F Street in Tacoma, McKinley Overlook has recently undergone a transformation thanks to the collaborative efforts of residents through the McKinley Hill Neighborhood Planning process. Council Member Sandesh Sadalge expressed his excitement for the upcoming event, stating that "when community comes together, great things can happen." He also highlighted how this project is a result of residents sharing their vision for what McKinley Overlook could be.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to plant approximately 550 native plants in newly constructed garden beds, contributing to the restoration of urban wildlife habitat. They will also be able to explore the recently developed walking path and take in panoramic views of Tacoma while connecting with neighbors.
The Neighborhood Planning Program, which emphasizes community-led planning and implementation, currently includes three neighborhoods including McKinley Hill. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to sign up in advance and can email neighborhoodplanning@cityoftacoma.org with any questions about the event or neighborhood plan.
With Earth Day just around the corner, this planting party serves as a reminder of how small actions can make a big impact on our environment. By coming together as a community, residents are not only creating a more beautiful space but also promoting and supporting community resilience. So mark your calendars for April 19 and join in on this celebration of Earth Day at McKinley Overlook.
