~ Spokane, WA- On the evening of June 28th, 2024, a potentially dangerous situation unfolded at a retail store on N. Division St. when Spokane Police Department (SPD) patrol officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle. According to employees at the store, the vehicle was possibly connected to a group of individuals who had been involved in shoplifting.

Upon arriving at the scene around 9:15pm, officers walked through the store and spotted a male holding clothing items who appeared to be looking for an opportunity to flee. The officers were able to identify the man and discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. As they approached him, he reached for his waistband and pulled out a pistol.

Realizing the extreme danger posed by an armed suspect in a public place, the officers attempted to control his arms and disarm him. Despite their warnings that they would use their own weapons if necessary, the suspect refused to drop his gun and a struggle ensued.

The fight continued behind the store registers where officers were finally able to gain control over the suspect and take away his loaded pistol. In addition to the firearm, he was found in possession of approximately 50 fentanyl pills and a baggie of powdered drugs.

"This was an extremely volatile situation which started over shoplifting and highlights the dangers our police officers face every day even in responding to seemingly lower level crimes," stated Julie Humphreys, Public Safety Communication Manager for SPD.

The suspect has been identified as Jesse S. Johnson (38) and has been booked into Spokane County Jail on multiple charges including two counts of 1st Degree Assault, 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Resisting Arrest. He is currently being held on more than one million dollars bond ($1,015,000).

Johnson has an extensive criminal history with prior felony convictions including Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Attempt to Elude, Vehicular Assault, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, 2nd Degree Assault, 1st Degree Theft, and Taking a Motor Vehicle without Permission.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis and the importance of their quick thinking and bravery in potentially life-threatening situations. The SPD is grateful that no one was injured in this incident and that the suspect was successfully apprehended.
