~ The Maple Street Bridge, which sees an average of 45,000 vehicles daily, has been successfully repaired and resurfaced. The project was completed within the estimated 10-week timeframe and was finished late Thursday, Nov. 2.
Public Works Director Marlene Feist expressed her delight at the successful completion of the project. "We are thrilled to have been able to replace the surface and also make critical joint repairs to give the bridge decades of life and safe travel" she said.
The $4.7 million project involved grinding and removing approximately three-quarters of an inch of the deck surface and replacing it with polyester concrete, a specialized product with a high level of bonding ability with the concrete deck foundation that increases structural capacity. In addition to a new surface, engineers identified joints that needed to be repaired and reinforced, which was able to be done within the window of the project timeline and will reduce future closures for needed repairs and maintenance.

The bridge was originally constructed in July 1958 at a cost of $6 million over two years as a toll bridge requiring payment for use until it was discontinued in 1990. During portions of the repair work, one lane of traffic was opened for access outside of working hours in order to provide access to this heavily traveled bridge.
