~ Spokane Fire Department Responds to Early Morning Fire at Sparky's Subs

In the early hours of Monday, February 19, 2002, the Spokane Fire Department was called to respond to a fire at Sparky's Subs on East Mission Avenue. According to multiple callers to 9-1-1, smoke was seen coming from the business. The first unit arrived at the scene at 1:48 a.m. and reported moderate smoke coming from the building.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Engine 8 quickly took action by deploying a hose to attack the fire. Meanwhile, personnel from Tower 2 forced entry into the building to ensure no one was inside. The firefighters discovered that the fire had originated near the electrical panel and were able to extinguish it promptly.

While the fire was contained to its origin area, heavy smoke damage was sustained throughout the rest of the building. Investigators were unable to determine a specific cause of the fire but believe an electrical system failure may have been responsible. At this time, there is no estimate for the extent of damage or loss.

According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, no injuries were reported in connection with this incident. For any further updates or information regarding this fire, please contact jderuyter@spokanecity.org.
