~ On Sunday, June 8, 2025, Spokane Police received multiple 911 calls about a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Maxwell Ave. and Washington St. According to witnesses, the vehicle involved had fled the scene after causing two separate crashes at that location. The fleeing vehicle was described as an older minivan.
The first crash was reported at 7:43pm and was considered minor. However, while attempting to leave the scene of the first crash, the driver, identified as Cautia McArthur (19), hit a pedestrian who was originally a passenger in the victim vehicle. Witnesses stated that the pedestrian was trying to prevent McArthur from fleeing and stepped in front of her vehicle. He was then hit and dragged for several blocks before sustaining life-threatening injuries.
McArthur has been booked into Spokane County Jail for two counts of Vehicular Assault and one count of Hit and Run with Injury, all of which are felony crimes. Both victims suffered extensive injuries including multiple fractures.
Due to the severity of the pedestrian's injuries, Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit responded to process the scene. At 7:45pm, another crash was reported at Monroe St. and Alice Ave., involving McArthur's vehicle from the previous incident. Video footage from a local business showed her vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed before colliding with another vehicle at an intersection.

The force of the crash caused both vehicles to hit seven additional parked cars nearby. The adult female victim in this second crash sustained serious injuries and McArthur herself was also treated for her injuries before being booked into jail.
According to data provided by Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), impaired driving fatalities have been on an upward trend in Spokane over the last decade while there has been a decline in Washington State as a whole in 2024. In response to this concerning trend, Spokane Police currently have two full-time DUI enforcement officers, one of which is grant-funded by WTSC.
In light of this recent incident, Sgt. Teresa Fuller, PIO, urges the public to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver on the road. The data provided by WTSC can be found on their website at https://wtsc.wa.gov/impairment-dashboard/.
The press release also included photos of the damaged vehicles involved in the crashes. One photo showed a damaged car at the intersection of Maxwell Ave. and Washington St., while another showed multiple damaged cars at Monroe St. and Alice Ave.
The Spokane Police Department is continuing to investigate these incidents and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
