~ In an effort to ensure that the voices of Tacoma and Pierce County residents are heard, Mayor Anders Ibsen and At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker are urging the community to participate in Sound Transit's public survey. The survey aims to gather feedback on important decisions that will greatly impact transit in Tacoma for years to come.
Council Member Walker, who also serves on the Sound Transit Board, emphasized the significance of this opportunity for the community. "As Sound Transit faces financial challenges, it is crucial for our community to have a say in decisions that will shape transit in Tacoma for decades," she stated. "Many people in our community rely on the Link light rail, Sounder trains, and ST Express buses, and I know many more are eager to see the Tacoma Dome Link Extension become a reality. This project is not just about transit; it is a promise to our community and the South Sound. Let's make sure our voices are heard loud and clear in this survey so that Tacoma gets its fair share and Sound Transit fulfills its commitment to connect our region."

The Tacoma Dome Link Extension is a vital component of the long-term transit vision for the Puget Sound region. It aims to provide residents with better access to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunities throughout Pierce County. However, the project has already faced a five-year delay from 2030 to 2035, and further delays would disproportionately affect South Sound communities that have been waiting for this investment for decades.
With nearly one million residents calling Tacoma and the broader South Sound home, this region serves as a major economic hub for Washington state. It supports a strong industrial base, a thriving port economy, and thousands of workers who rely on efficient transportation options as congestion on Interstate 5 continues to worsen.
The planned Tacoma Dome Station will serve as the primary multimodal hub for the South Sound region, connecting regional light rail with local transit connections such as the T Line. The City of Tacoma has already taken significant steps to prepare for this investment, including rezoning and supporting transit-oriented development around the station area.

Mayor Ibsen stressed the importance of equity in this matter, stating, "This is an equity issue. Tacoma and Pierce County residents have contributed to Sound Transit and deserve equal access to reliable, high-capacity transit as communities to the north. We cannot let Tacoma and the South Sound bear the burden of delays while other parts of the system move forward. We need every resident who cares about mobility, affordability, climate, and economic opportunity to take the survey and make their voice heard."
Residents are encouraged to complete the Sound Transit survey, talk to friends and family about the significance of speaking up for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, and share the survey with others. More information about Sound Transit's public engagement process can be found on their website.
The deadline for completing the survey is fast approaching, so Mayor Ibsen and Council Member Walker urge all residents to make their voices heard before it's too late. This is a crucial opportunity for Tacoma and Pierce County residents to shape their community's future in terms of transportation accessibility and economic growth.
