~ On Monday, the Spokane City Council voted unanimously to adopt the Annual Budget for the City of 2024. Finance Chair Betsy Wilkerson expressed her satisfaction with the budget, saying that it was a product of sustainable solutions that had been sought since 2021.

In order to ensure transparency and collaboration, Council agreed to disband the three-person budget committee and allow all Council members unfiltered access to the Mayor's Cabinet. This allowed for difficult decisions about the budget to be addressed.

Council has also been imposing substantial restrictions and practicing fiscal conservatism in order to protect reserve balances and promote a sustainable budget. This included a 10% reduction in departmental budgets beginning in 2022, as well as a 10% reduction in the Council budget in 2023.

Council Member Michael Cathcart expressed his optimism for the future of the budget process, citing reforms that would force adoption of a sustainable budget, balance long-term goals, and equip the community with effective tools for public involvement in setting priorities.

The 2024 Annual Budget is a product of collaboration between Council and Administration that will keep constituents at the forefront of servicing the community.
