Spokane: Camp Sekani Update 09/25/26

~ Incredible progress has been made at Camp Sekani over the past few weeks, as the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and volunteer partners have worked tirelessly to mitigate hazards and restore trails. As a result, the popular outdoor recreation area is set to reopen on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The DNR's Hazard Mitigation Work and Urban Forestry team completed a majority of the necessary hazard tree removals before their work was halted due to the Spokane Complex Fires. However, they recently handed the site back over to the Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry team, who completed additional hazard tree removals. The Urban Forestry team will continue to monitor the area for any potential hazards.

One of the key partners in this restoration effort has been Evergreen East Mountain Bike Alliance. Their dedicated volunteers have been instrumental in assessing and rehabilitating trails, filling in burned out stump holes, and even rebuilding a ramp known as "Leap of Faith." The city officials expressed their gratitude towards Evergreen East for their hard work and commitment to Beacon Hill.

While visitors are encouraged to return to Camp Sekani, there are some important safety precautions that must be followed. The landscape may look different due to the fires, so visitors are strongly urged to stay on designated trails in order to avoid any unknown hazards. Additionally, due to ongoing construction projects at Camp Sekani and John Sheilds Park, parking at the Camp Sekani trailhead is currently unavailable. Visitors are advised to park at Boulder Beach, John Sheilds Park, or Minnehaha Park (east gravel lot). It is also important for visitors to be cautious of changing trail conditions after wind or rain events.

The disc golf course at Camp Sekani will be fully open except for hole #1 which is currently closed due to the Make Beacon Hill Public Phase II construction project. This project includes expanding the parking lot, adding a new restroom building, lighting, fencing, and trailhead cameras. Once this phase is completed, construction will move to John Sheilds Park for similar improvements.

The city officials also mentioned that there will be volunteer opportunities in mid to late October for seeding the burn area and continuing trail improvements. Interested individuals can find more information on upcoming events and volunteer opportunities on Evergreen East's website.
