Tacoma Arts Month Celebrates 25 Years This October

~ Tacoma Arts Month, a beloved community celebration of arts and culture, is returning this October for its 25th anniversary. The month-long event will feature hundreds of community-hosted arts and culture events taking place throughout the city. From music and dance performances to art exhibits, film screenings, literary readings, cultural events, and workshops for all ages, there is something for everyone to enjoy. All events are open to the public and many are free of charge.

Presented by the City of Tacoma's Arts & Cultural Vitality Division, Tacoma Arts Month showcases the vibrant and diverse arts scene in the city. Artists, venues, and community organizations across Tacoma come together to host a variety of events that celebrate creativity and promote cultural exchange. These events can be found in one convenient location at TacomaArtsMonth.org.

One of the highlights of Tacoma Arts Month is Kaleidoscope, a free family-friendly celebration on October 3 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Tacoma Public Library Main Branch. The event will feature live music, dance performances, poetry readings, hands-on art activities, and workshops presented by dozens of local artists and cultural organizations. The Handforth Gallery will also host an exhibition called "The 253," featuring works by local artists who have been involved in Tacoma Arts Month over its 25-year history. Additionally, several food truck vendors will be on site to provide delicious refreshments. Kaleidoscope is presented in partnership with Tacoma Public Library and Tacoma Creates.

On October 6 at 5 p.m., during a City Council meeting at the Tacoma Municipal Building, the City Council will present a proclamation declaring October as Tacoma Arts Month. This meeting will also serve as the platform for presenting the 2026 AMOCAT Arts Awards. These awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to Tacoma's arts and cultural life. This year's recipients include Theresa Pan Hosley and Angela Jossy for Community Outreach by an Individual, Rainbow Center and Ted Brown Music for Community Outreach by an Organization, and the Arts & Culture Coalition of Pierce County for Arts Patron. Each award is handcrafted by Hilltop Artists using recycled glass.

Another exciting event during Tacoma Arts Month is the Tacoma Studio Tour. On October 17 and 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., over 100 local artists will open their working studios to the public. This free, self-guided tour allows visitors to learn about the artistic process, ask questions, and purchase unique works of art directly from the artists. Each studio will also offer a demonstration or interactive activity for visitors to participate in. A full list of participating studios and an interactive map can be found at TacomaArtsMonth.org. Visitors can also pick up a Tacoma Studio Tour discovery card, collect stamps by completing challenges at each studio, and submit it for a chance to win artwork made by artists on the tour.

The event is free and family-friendly.
