The Airway Heights, Wash. shop has built recycling equipment since 1977, became its own conveyor company in 1991, and has produced more than 1,500 systems.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - Washingtoner -- Remcon Equipment, Inc., a builder of heavy-duty conveyor systems in Airway Heights, Washington, marks 35 years as a conveyor company this year. Over its history Remcon has produced more than 1,500 systems for recycling facilities, each with up to 20 conveyors and related equipment.

The company's roots go back to 1977, when it began building recycling equipment as a division of a structural steel fabricator. In 1991 Remcon became a separate company focused on designing, fabricating and installing custom conveyor systems for recycling plants. It started supplying conveyors for computerized optical sorting systems in 1998 and has built more than 150 of those high-speed sorting conveyors since.

Remcon builds mainly for recycling plants, where conveyors carry whole and broken glass, tin and aluminum cans, plastic, paper and corrugated containers. About 95 percent of its production is slider bed, combination drag chain belt and roller chain belt conveyors, plus the support structures, hoppers, chutes, personnel platforms and stairs that go with them. Every machine leaves the shop with a nameplate showing its model, serial and project number.

Remcon also builds custom conveyors for other manufacturers' sorting systems, along with troughing idler conveyors for mining and aggregate work. The shop repairs and refurbishes used equipment too, including conveyors built by other companies.

The anniversary year brought a change at the top. Sean Johnston was named CEO in August as the company prepares to expand production capacity. Dennis Lux, who led Remcon for decades, remains with the company as CEO emeritus.

"Recycling is rough on equipment, and this shop has had 35 years to learn what holds up," said Johnston. "We're adding capacity so we can build more. We aren't changing how we build."
