~ ### Tacoma seeks public input on I-5 crossings

The City of Tacoma is asking residents and other community members to share their experiences crossing Interstate 5 as part of a new study focused on safety, access and neighborhood connections.

The Tacoma I-5 Crossings Study will examine streets, bridges and underpasses linking neighborhoods on either side of the highway. The city says the findings could help identify improvements for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit or driving.

An online survey is open to residents, workers, students, business owners and visitors through Nov. 6, 2026. It asks which crossings people use, where they travel, what barriers or safety concerns they encounter, and what changes they would like to see.

"Crossing over or under I-5 can be dangerous, whether you are on a bike, walking, or rolling, but the City aims to fix that," Mayor Anders Ibsen said, urging people who feel unsafe to take part. He said the study will help inform future projects and funding.

Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell said the study will look for ways to make travel through the crossings safer and more accessible. Council Member Kristina Walker said community input will help identify safety and access problems, particularly in historically marginalized neighborhoods.

District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge said the highway's construction disrupted established neighborhoods and created lasting barriers. He said the study offers a chance to understand what is working and where connections between the Eastside, South End and the rest of Tacoma could be improved.

The survey is the first opportunity for public input. The city plans additional engagement, including community events, school activities and stakeholder conversations.
