~ The City of Spokane plans to offer free asbestos surveys to residents whose properties were affected by the Old Trails Fire, if their home insurance does not cover the service. The program depends on City Council approval of a resolution on Wednesday, October 14.

The city said it received authorization from the Washington State Department of Commerce to use Wildfire Housing Assistance Funds for asbestos testing. Property owners can submit a form to request a survey. Residents who have already paid for testing not covered by insurance can also apply for retroactive reimbursement of up to $1,600.

The city will hold two community resource events to help residents with asbestos surveys and other rebuilding and recovery needs. Staff and community partners will provide information on wildfire housing assistance, rebuilding regulations, temporary housing on fire-affected properties and free second opinions on contractor and development quotes.

The first event is scheduled for October 13 at 6 p.m. at Flett Middle School, 5020 W. Wellesley Ave. The second is set for October 28 at 6 p.m. at Salk Middle School, 6411 N. Alberta.

"Navigating the rebuilding process can be difficult and overwhelming, but the City of Spokane is here to help," Mayor Lisa Brown said. She said the events are intended to help affected families plan next steps and provide relief during recovery.
