WASHINGTON - Washingtoner -- The 2022 ReadyCommunities Partnership (RCP) National Service Awards were announced Wednesday on Capitol Hill to recognize the Community of Mendon together with Kansas City-based Battalion Chief Todd Covington and Firefighter Joe Disciacca, and Dr. Eric Hoyt of Mendon who were integral to the initial response to the 2022 train derailment with 270 passengers and 12 crew.

While recognizing the Community of Mendon with a National Service Award for Leadership and Collaboration to Comfort and Save Derailed Passenger Lives, and with respect to the many organizations and counties who responded to the call for mutual aid, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Hon. According to the Kansas City Fire Department Resolution No. TMP-2081, BC Covington and FF Disciacca who were aboard the train when it derailed, went above and beyond what was expected to save lives and prevent further injuries.
