~ Spokane, WA - On the afternoon of April 18, 2024, Spokane Police Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 5900 block of North Lindeke. According to the caller, a man had been threatened with a knife by another male who then proceeded to pull out a handgun and fire it. The armed suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that the victim was attempting to tow the suspect's vehicle as part of a repossession. The suspect allegedly tried to stop the tow truck driver by threatening him and then stabbing and shooting at one of the truck's tires.

Through their investigation, officers were able to identify the suspect and discovered that he had previous felony convictions which prohibited him from possessing or carrying a firearm. They also learned that in late 2023, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office had filed a report stating that the suspect's girlfriend had warned he was armed and dangerous and may engage with police in an attempt to be shot. Additionally, it was revealed that the suspect was involved in another shooting in late 2023 where he unlawfully fired a handgun.

Based on this information, officers developed probable cause for charges of drive-by shooting and unlawful possession of a firearm related to the incident on Lindeke.

At approximately 6:11 PM, officers received information that the suspect may be in or near Shadle Park. Just three minutes later, they were informed that he was running on foot through Shadle Park heading south. Shortly after, shots were reported to have been fired.

The suspect was eventually located running towards Shadle Park High School (SPHS) where a baseball game was being played. Officers pursued him past the baseball field and shots were fired at Longfellow Ave on the edge of SPHS campus.

According to reports from authorities, three Spokane Police Department (SPD) officers discharged their firearms during this incident. The suspect was struck multiple times and a handgun was recovered at the scene. Officers provided initial medical care to the suspect before he was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As per standard protocol, the three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. In compliance with WAC 139-12, SPD personnel will not be involved in the investigation.

The case is being managed by the Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIIR) Team, which is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington including the Washington State Patrol, Liberty Lake Police Department, Airway Heights Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff's Office, and SPD (although SPD will not be involved in this particular investigation). The SIIR Team will handle all future communications regarding this incident.

The names of the involved officers will be released at a later date by SPD. Once the SIIR Team completes their investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor's Office for review.
