~ Spokane City Allocates $7.5 Million for Affordable Housing Projects and Programs
The City of Spokane has recently announced the allocation of $7.5 million towards nine local affordable housing projects and programs. This decision was made in an effort to increase and preserve affordable housing inventory, support vulnerable populations, and promote homeownership opportunities.
According to Erin Hut, the Communications Director for the city, four funding sources were available for allocation in this latest round. These included $5 million from HEART Funds, $1 million from 1406 Affordable Housing Development Funds, $999,098 from HOME Affordable Housing Development Funds, and $500,000 from HOME-ARP TBRA Funds.
Out of the nine projects receiving funding, four will be new construction projects that will provide a total of 95 new units of mixed incoming housing. Sixty-three of these units will serve households earning 60% or less than the Area Median Income (AMI).
In addition to new construction projects, two awards have been allocated to rehabilitation projects that will preserve 50 units of affordable housing for households earning 50% or less than AMI. These projects will also add an additional 49 units serving households earning 80% or less than AMI.

A new homeownership project is also included in the funding allocation which will lead to the construction of 12 single-family townhomes. Six of these townhomes will be sold to households earning 80% or less than AMI.
Furthermore, two additional projects have been selected to serve vulnerable populations as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These projects are expected to serve a total of 86 eligible households.
The list of funded projects includes Proclaim Liberty Bethany receiving $885,000 for new construction; Volunteers of America Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho receiving $2 million; Threshold Project receiving $1,599,098; Mujeres in Action's Affordable Housing Program receiving $222,494 for new construction; Collins Building receiving $892,506 for rehabilitation leading to new units; Cornerstone Courtyard receiving $400,000 for rehabilitation leading to new units; Ben Burr Townhomes receiving $1 million for homeownership; Mujeres In Action - Safe Harbor receiving $224,000 from HOME-ARP TBRA funds; and Family Promise of Spokane receiving $276,000 from HOME-ARP TBRA funds.
Mayor Brown expressed his support for the funding allocation, stating that these dollars are specifically designated to expand affordable housing and will have a significant impact on the community. He also emphasized the importance of investing in a variety of projects that serve different communities in order to promote stability and opportunity for all.
