~ Spokane Fire Department responded to a warehouse fire at 101 North Madelia Street last night at 8:18 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of black smoke coming from the building. Engine 7, located in the East Central neighborhood, arrived on the scene within three minutes and discovered heavy, dark smoke pouring from every window and door of the two-story commercial structure.

Upon conducting a quick interior assessment, firefighters determined that the fire was too advanced for an offensive attack and immediately shifted to a defensive strategy. As more units arrived, the main focus became containing the fire to the original building. However, crews faced significant hazards including nearby fuel tank storage, potential structural collapse with bulging walls and roof failure, and numerous powerlines in close proximity.

The situation quickly escalated to a third alarm and it took approximately two hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control. Despite their efforts, the warehouse was deemed a total loss. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among firefighters or members of the public. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but due to a partial building collapse, an interior examination may not be possible.

Fire crews will remain on site throughout the day to extinguish any remaining hot spots, assist with investigations, and ensure that there is no risk of rekindling. Residents in the area should expect to see smoke during this time.

The Spokane Fire Department would like to extend their gratitude to their partners at Spokane Valley Fire Department, Spokane County Fire District 8, and Spokane County Fire District 9 for their assistance with suppression efforts and providing coverage for other areas of the city during this incident.
