~ Spokane City is set to undergo a major traffic change as W. Maxwell Ave. will be closed for almost a month starting Monday, Aug. 25th. The closure, which will last until Friday, September 19th, is due to traffic signal upgrades as part of the ongoing Maxwell Pettet to Walnut Bike/Pedestrian project.

According to Kirstin Davis, the Communications Manager for Spokane City, the project aims to enhance bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along Maxwell Ave. from Pettet Drive to Walnut Street. This includes the installation of new sidewalks, bike lanes, and crosswalk enhancements in order to better connect the West Central Neighborhood with AM Cannon Park, the West Central Community Center, and the Centennial Trail.

Drivers are advised to slow down and be cautious while navigating through this area during construction. Davis also urges them to make an extra effort in supporting local businesses that may be impacted by this necessary work. Information about current obstructions affecting drivers in the city can be found on Spokane City's construction webpage.

The closure will result in several changes for motorists and pedestrians alike. On Monday, Aug. 25th, W. Maxwell Ave. will be completely closed in both directions between N. Elm St. and N. Walnut St., while northbound Maple St. and southbound Ash St. will remain open at their intersections with Maxwell Ave., although lane reductions and slowdowns should be expected.

In addition, Ash St. will have reduced lanes between Spofford Ave. and Maxwell Ave., while eastbound motorists on Pettet Dr. will be detoured at Belt St., leading them to Indiana St., and westbound motorists on W.Maxwell Ave.will be detoured at Monroe St., either north towards Northwest Blvd or south towards Boone Ave.

Pedestrians may also experience sidewalk detours during this time; however, local access will still be maintained during non-working hours.

Funding for this project comes from the Washington State Pedestrian/Bike Program, Arterial Street Fund, and Washington Climate Commitment Act (CCA). More information about the CCA can be found on their website.
