Today the City of Tacoma filed a response to a lawsuit brought against the City and Pierce County by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 367, Tacoma For All, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Democratic Socialists of America.
As laid out in the City's legal filing, the Tacoma City Council, City Clerk, and City Attorneys followed both the City Charter and applicable Washington State laws.
The plaintiffs' proposal is a complex set of regulations that would have negative impacts on every Tacoma resident and their family. Their proposal, as written, does not simply provide a minimum wage increase. Its scheduling requirements and other demands caused great concern and required Council Members' due diligence.

During public comments, City Council Members listened to residents' worries about the potential impacts this Initiative might have on first responders, hospitals, small businesses, non-profits, the Port of Tacoma, and a diverse community of employers and workers. It was these Tacoma residents Council Members kept top of mind during this entire process and will continue to prioritize in all their duties.
