~ Tacoma, Wash. - The City of Tacoma is set to begin implementing the Home in Tacoma zoning and standards package on February 1, 2025. This follows extensive community engagement and the adoption of Ordinance 28793 in November of last year.
The package aims to promote greater housing diversity and affordability throughout Tacoma by introducing new zoning regulations. This includes the establishment of three new Urban Residential (UR) zones, which will replace existing residential zoning. These zones will allow for a variety of innovative housing types such as houseplexes, backyard cottages, rowhouses, courtyard housing, and multiplexes.

In addition to the new zoning regulations, the package also revises minimum parking requirements and emphasizes tree preservation and planting initiatives. It also allows for more flexible subdivision of lots and non-residential uses.
City officials have made information on Ordinance 28793 readily available to the public through summary sheets, final code, an interactive zoning map, and other project materials on the city's website at cityoftacoma.org/homeintacoma. Permitting information can also be found at tacomapermits.org.
For any questions or concerns regarding Home in Tacoma, community members can contact Alyssa Torrez at atorrez@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 878-3767. The City encourages residents to stay informed about this important initiative that will impact housing diversity and affordability in Tacoma.
