From clinical psychology to fashion: Jamaican-born designer Nova Lorraine staged Between Worlds in goose down, hand woven knit and oxblood red.
NEW YORK - Washingtoner -- Nova Lorraine trained in clinical psychology before she trained as a designer. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, she presented Between Worlds, her second New York Fashion Week collection, to an invitation-only room filled to capacity by advance interest.
Male and female models alike wore a single gold line down the center of the face, hairline to chin, marking the in-between state we are always in. Hair followed the same logic. Sleek updos were wrapped in gold thread; natural curls were worked with gold woven braids at the front.
Goose down filled, unisex outerwear anchored the show, built from textured wovens and knit detailing. Dramatic collars with removable hoods emphasized the collection's sculptural approach. A floor-length ombré coat, red to oxblood to black, with an asymmetrical chiffon train, closed the runway.
Hand woven knit sets and dresses followed, including a floor-length dress coat with matching openwork skirt, a cocoon dress in heavy rib that stood away from the body, and distressed multilayered sweaters with gold laddered openings across the chest, shown cropped and full length on women and men.
The show opened on a black gown with oxblood faux fur detailing on the bolero and a mermaid hemline. Evening pieces turned to contrast print: a black and white contrast print appeared as both a halter dress and a gathered full skirt with a side split, a red wax print was drawn into a one-shoulder drape, and a gold silk gown was finished with floral appliqué. The palette ran black and oxblood red for power, gold for prosperity, and white for the pause itself.

"Our highest potential and greatest power lie in the moments in between, in the present, inside the chrysalis," said Lorraine.
Between Worlds follows Woven Dreams, the house's 2025 New York Fashion Week debut. Lorraine holds a master's degree in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut and a design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. House of Nova produces its handcrafted, limited-edition pieces with women-led partners in New York and globally, including handweavers in Kenya and tailors in coastal Nigeria. In 2024 she was one of 22 Impact Artists selected by BitBasel, and her artwork joined the Lunaprise Moon Museum, making her the first Jamaican fashion designer to have art land on the Moon.
Items from the collection are available online and as of October 1st through DOORS NYC, A private collectors club is set to launch, and Aurra, the house's AI styling companion, is in development.
The audience included editors from PIX11, The Heart Thread and JWC Media, alongside stylists, creators and television personalities. Actor and producer Monique Coleman previewed the collection at a private fitting two days earlier.
