~ On Saturday, April 20, 2024, at approximately 4:10 a.m., the Spokane Fire Department received a call reporting a house fire in the 1700 block of Howard. According to reports to 9-1-1, the porch of the house was on fire and the caller was unable to access the front door due to the intense flames.
Engine 3 arrived at the scene in less than four minutes and immediately observed heavy fire coming from the front of the house. Despite facing challenging conditions, fire crews were able to make their way into the interior of the house from the second floor at the rear of the building. Their primary objective was to search for any potential victims.
In a swift and heroic effort, four victims were located and rescued from the second floor of the house. Among them were two adults and two children. Unfortunately, one adult male was declared deceased on scene. The remaining adult and two children were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Due to ongoing rescues and advancing fire, Tour Commander of Spokane Fire Department elevated this incident to a second alarm. Medical interventions were immediately initiated by both Spokane Fire and AMR crews upon arrival.
The Spokane Fire Department Special Investigations Unit is currently on scene working alongside Spokane Police Department to determine the cause of this tragic fire. The identity of the deceased will be released in collaboration with Spokane Police Department once it has been confirmed.
