Mayor Nadine Woodward, Gonzaga University President Thayne McCulloh and Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl urge community teamwork for today's highly anticipated NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Championship game between Gonzaga and Baylor.

Regardless of the outcome of today's game, City and University leaders are reminding the community to continue to be healthy and safe while cheering on and celebrating the amazing season of the Gonzaga University men's basketball team.

"Cheering on the Zags is a gift we have had since November. For months, we have been good community teammates by wearing our masks and gathering responsibly, says Mayor Nadine Woodward. Let's stay on the road to healthy outcomes as we root for our team and their success."

Police Chief Meidl urges students and community members alike to celebrate safely and lawfully. "This is a great time of celebration for the amazing success of the Gonzaga basketball team.  The Spokane Police Department shares in this excitement, but we want to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly.  In order to ensure the safety of our community, SPD will have extra resources available and will be enforcing violations of the law," adds Chief Meidl.

Gonzaga University President Thayne McCulloh shares a message with the community. "Gonzaga is proud to call Spokane home and we are grateful for the support of this amazing community.  We are proud of our Men's basketball program, for all they have accomplished, and look forward to tonight's incredible contest.  I join with Mayor Woodward and Chief Meidl in asking that everyone celebrate safely and legally, with respect for our neighbors in the local community, and for Spokane Police Department officers and all of our first responders, who every day make sacrifices to keep our community safe," says University President McCulloh.
