~ At a special meeting held today, the Tacoma City Council unanimously voted to forward Initiative 2 to the Pierce County Auditor for further review. The initiative, which aims to address issues such as living wages, access to hours, secure scheduling, and safer workplaces, was presented to the City Council for adoption.
According to the Tacoma City Charter, the City Council has 30 days to review any proposed initiatives and assess their potential impacts on the community. However, this timeframe was deemed insufficient by the council members in fully understanding the implications of Initiative 2.
In a statement released by Mayor Victoria Woodards, she expressed her support for the petitioners' goals but raised concerns about potential unintended consequences of the initiative as written. The City Council ultimately decided not to adopt an initiative that they could not confidently say is in the best interest of all Tacoma residents.

Despite this decision, Mayor Woodards acknowledges that there are valid concerns and questions raised about labor standards in Tacoma. As a result, she has proposed a task force that will examine both the standards outlined in Initiative 2 and those brought up by community feedback. The task force will then present policy improvement recommendations to the City Council for consideration.
For those with questions or concerns about this decision, they can contact Bucoda Warren in the Office of Mayor Victoria Woodards at bucoda.warren@tacoma.gov or (253) 318-0594.
More information on the City of Tacoma's initial response to Initiative 2 can be found on their website. It is clear that while there may be differing opinions on how best to address labor standards in Tacoma, both sides are committed to finding solutions that benefit all members of the community.
