~ The Tacoma Planning Commission has announced that a public hearing will be held on August 6, 2025 at no earlier than 5:30 p.m. to discuss proposed amendments to the sections of the Tacoma Municipal Code related to the Historic Preservation Program. The hearing will take place in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual participation options available.
According to the commission, the proposed changes aim to improve the process and criteria for creating local historic districts, enhance cultural resource protections, and provide broader access to a tool that addresses Special Tax Valuation. This tool offers a temporary reduction in property assessed value for historic buildings that have undergone renovations.

Other anticipated changes include stricter demolition review requirements and the potential creation of a commemorative sites register, which would not have regulatory power.
In preparation for the public hearing, two community information sessions will be held. The first will be virtual on July 24, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom, while the second will be in-person on July 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mottet Branch of the Tacoma Public Library.
Community members who are unable to attend either session can submit written comments to the Planning Department or Tacoma Planning Commission by August 8, 2025 at 5 p.m. These comments will be taken into consideration by the commission when finalizing their recommendations to the City Council.
More details about the proposed amendments can be found on tacoma.gov/project/historic-preservation-code-update. For any questions or requests for information in an alternate format, community members can contact Historic Preservation Officer Reuben McKnight at rmcknigh@tacoma.gov.
