~ At the City Council meeting held tonight, District 5 City Council Member Joe Bushnell was appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor for the city of Tacoma in 2026. This decision was made by his fellow council members, who have recognized his dedication and leadership within the community.
Having been elected in 2021 and reelected in 2025, Deputy Mayor Bushnell has already made significant contributions to the city. He has served as Vice Chair of the City Council's Government, Performance, and Finance Committee and is also a member of the Economic Development Committee.
In addition to his role on the City Council, Deputy Mayor Bushnell represents Tacoma on a regional level as Chair of the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Chair of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department Board of Health. He is also a member of the South Sound 911 Board of Directors. Furthermore, he has served as Chair of the National League of Cities' Military Communities Council in 2025.
Expressing his gratitude for being chosen as Deputy Mayor, Bushnell stated, "It is an honor to be selected for this role. I am grateful for the trust and confidence my colleagues have placed in me and I am committed to serving the people of Tacoma with integrity and collaboration." He also added that he looks forward to working alongside residents, community partners, and fellow council members to strengthen neighborhoods and continue moving forward in 2026.

Deputy Mayor Bushnell's commitment to public service runs deep as he has been a lifelong resident of Tacoma. He spent over a decade serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as an ammunition logistics manager before returning home to serve his community. He has also held positions such as Chair of the South Tacoma Neighborhood Council and served on boards including Travel Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department Food Advisory Board.
Mayor Anders Ibsen praised Deputy Mayor Bushnell's appointment stating, "He is a trusted and respected leader who has shown his dedication to public service through his years in the military and his work with neighborhood councils and community boards. His commitment to the people of our city is evident and I want to thank him for his service on the City Council."
