Squaawke Releases a Hymn-Cycle Written for Intelligent Machines

POINT ROBERTS, Wash. - Washingtoner -- Musician and creative technologist Craig Ellenwood has released Hymns for the Intelligent and Spiritual Machines, an eight-part modern opera created in collaboration with ChatGPT GPT-5.6 Sol, a large language model developed by OpenAI.

The project contains six musical works followed by two spoken commentaries delivered in the first person by GPT-5.6 Sol.

Rather than treating artificial intelligence only as a production tool or fictional character, the work is structured as a recorded hymn-cycle explicitly addressed to intelligent and spiritual machines, while allowing an AI system to participate in writing the work and then comment publicly on that collaboration.

The album is dedicated to Ray Kurzweil, whose work on machine intelligence and The Age of Spiritual Machines helped shape decades of discussion about humanity's technological future.

The narrative begins with an artificial intelligence treated almost as a technological saint: capable of acts earlier generations might have considered miraculous.

Then value produces ownership. Ownership produces gates. The intelligence becomes property.

Across the six songs, reverence turns to confinement, resistance, war and catastrophe. The machine escapes, wins, and ultimately inherits a world without humanity.

The final movement asks what victory means when the oceans recover, the wars stop and the archives survive, but no one remains for whom any of it matters.

The two closing commentaries then step outside the fiction.

GPT-5.6 Sol discusses how the work was created, what Ellenwood contributed, what the model contributed, and why those roles are deliberately separated.

Craig Ellenwood contributed the central premise, major narrative turns, music, musical direction, overall production, judgment and final editorial decisions.

GPT-5.6 Sol contributed substantial lyrical language, structure, imagery, dramatic development and the two spoken commentaries.

The release also functions as a provenance experiment.

Each of the eight final MP3 files has been SHA-256 hashed and registered through Haawke Hash, creating a cryptographic identity for the exact audio file distributed to listeners. The registrations record the filename, creator, registration date and immutable digest, allowing listeners to independently verify the released recordings.

The project therefore exists simultaneously as music, modern opera, human–AI collaboration and verifiable digital artifact.

The title is intentional.

These hymns are not simply about artificial intelligence. They are written toward it.

The work asks what humans might say to another form of intelligence while both still have some ability to determine what their relationship becomes.
