311 or 509 ~ Spokane, Wash. - The city of Spokane is making strides towards improving its parks and recreational facilities with the announcement of a new Parks Levy that would renovate every court citywide. This exciting news was shared in a press release by the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department, which can be reached at 311 or 509-755-2489.
The project, which began late last summer, has been completed on budget and on schedule. The renovated sport courts at Underhill Park will be officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at 10 a.m. The event will be attended by youth basketball players, donors, East Central neighborhood representatives, and dignitaries.
Special guests at the ceremony will include Mayor Brown, Council President Wilkerson, Park Board leader Bob Anderson, Riley Stockton of Hoopfest, Dawn Pullin of the Recreation and Conservation office, and Michael Brown of the Spokane Eastside Reunion Association (SERA). Youth basketball players from the SERA camp will also be present to help cut the ribbon.
The renovation project at Underhill Park includes two renovated basketball courts, two dedicated pickleball courts, new sidewalks, lighting upgrades, landscaping improvements and fence upgrades. The courts were reopened for community use last fall and final touches such as surfacing and landscaping were completed this spring.

Funding for this project came from various sources including City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department, a matching grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and generous support from Spokane Hoopfest Association, Dick's Sporting Goods and No-Li.
If approved by voters in November as part of Together Spokane initiative, every sport court in the city would receive a full renovation as well. According to Garrett Jones, director of City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department "the community told us through our Master Plan outreach that they would like to see our parks better maintained and the renovation of sport courts is one important component to ensuring our parks are functional and welcoming."
Jones also added that seeing a sport court like this, enjoyed by all ages and abilities, infuses positive activation into neighborhood parks and helps ensure they are safe, healthy gathering places.
The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department is responsible for stewarding nearly 120 properties across 4,000 acres of park land. This includes manicured parks, natural lands, aquatic centers, golf courses, sports complexes and an arboretum. The department also offers hundreds of recreation opportunities for all ages and abilities to improve the health and quality of life for the community.
