Spokane: City Details Fourth of July Activities, Closures

~ Spokane, WA - As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the City of Spokane has announced several closures and cancellations in observance of Independence Day. Erin Hut, the Communications Director for the city, stated that City Hall and other city facilities will be closed on Friday, July 4. This includes the Waste-to-Energy facility.

In addition to these closures, Hut also mentioned that garbage, recycling, and food & yard waste services will be delayed by one day after the holiday. Normal Friday services will resume on Saturday.

Hut also provided a list of other closures and cancellations for Independence Day. On-street paid parking meters and kiosks will not require payments on the holiday, but all parking rules still apply. The Spokane Public Library locations will be closed, as well as the Spokane Municipal Court and Community Justice Services. Residents are reminded that Spokane 311 employees will not be available for in-person, phone, or online customer service inquiries on July 4th. However, requests can still be submitted through Spokane311.org at any time.

The Development Services Center employees will also not be available on Independence Day. The city's six aquatic centers will be closed as well. City Council meetings will resume on Monday, July 14 with a series of meetings throughout the day.

While many activities are planned for the holiday weekend, including the Riverfront Summer Carnival presented by ICCU from July 2nd to July 6th and a free concert and fireworks show on July 4th presented by ICCU, residents are reminded to follow safety guidelines when it comes to fireworks.

The City of Spokane Fire Department wants to remind everyone that amateur (consumer) fireworks are illegal in several areas including Spokane County and surrounding cities such as Spokane Valley and Cheney. Fines for using illegal fireworks can reach up to $536 per infraction. This includes sparklers which are often thought to be safe but can still cause harm. Residents are encouraged to report any violations by calling Crime Check at 509-456-2233.

For those looking to dispose of unwanted fireworks, the household hazardous waste area at the Waste-to-Energy Facility will be open with no disposal cost. Additionally, splash pads and golf courses will be open for those looking to cool off during the holiday weekend.
