~ Spokane, WA - The City of Spokane is set to begin two major pedestrian and bicycle improvement projects on Monday, June 30th. These projects, which are expected to last through September and October respectively, aim to enhance safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians in the city.
According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane, motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes during peak traffic hours in order to reduce the impact of these projects. She also emphasized the importance of slowing down for everyone's safety and supporting local businesses that may be affected by the necessary construction.
The first project, known as the Lincoln St. Pedestrian and Bike Safety Project, will focus on N. Lincoln St. between W. Boone Ave. and W. Sinto Ave. This stretch of road will be closed for the entire duration of the project, with motorists being detoured through north Monroe St., west Boone Ave., north Howard St., and west Maxwell Ave.
The improvements along Lincoln St. include buffered and protected bike lanes, widened sidewalks, a grind-and-overlay from Summit Parkway to Boone Ave., and a new signal at the intersection of Lincoln St. and Broadway Ave.

Drivers should expect slower speeds and traffic delays in this area during construction. However, local residential access will be maintained throughout the project.
In addition to this project, work will also begin on Monday morning on Maxwell Ave. in West Central as part of the Pedestrian and Bike Safety Upgrades project. This project aims to enhance bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along Maxwell Ave. between Pettet Dr. and Walnut St.
Funded by Washington's Climate Commitment Act (CCA), these upgrades include new sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, and crosswalk enhancements to better connect the West Central Neighborhood with AM Cannon Park, the West Central Community Center, and the Centennial Trail.
Drivers can expect speed reductions and lane closures along West Maxwell Ave. during the project, which is expected to be completed in October. However, local residential access and business accessibility will be maintained.
The City of Spokane has provided maps for both projects on their construction webpage, allowing drivers to plan their routes accordingly. The intersections of Lincoln St. and Mallon Ave. and Lincoln St. and Broadway Ave. may also experience temporary closures for up to two weeks, although these closures will not occur simultaneously.
As the City of Spokane works towards improving pedestrian and bicycle safety, they urge motorists to be patient and considerate during this time of construction. By slowing down and using alternate routes when possible, everyone can help reduce the impact of these necessary projects on the community.
