~ As the summer season approaches, fire officials in the Spokane Metro Area are taking precautions to prevent human-caused wildfires. Despite recent lower temperatures and increased rainfall, the risk of fire still remains high.

On Monday, June 30, 2025, Fire Marshals from various agencies including Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD), City of Spokane Fire Department (SFD), Spokane County, City of Cheney, City of Airway Heights, and City of Deer Park have implemented a Fire Danger Burn Restriction. This restriction will go into effect at 0800 and will remain in place until further notice.

According to Lance Dahl, Fire Marshal for the City of Spokane Fire Department, these restrictions are necessary to protect the community from potential wildfires. He explains that such restrictions are common during warm and dry summer months and serve as an additional measure to prevent significant wildfire incidents.

Under these restrictions, all unauthorized open burning and recreational fires are prohibited unless authorized by law enforcement or other authorized agencies. Deputy Fire Marshal Ken Johnson from SVFD urges everyone to be vigilant and follow burn restrictions in order to prevent unplanned fires. He also reminds people that continued warm and dry conditions have increased the risk of wildfires in the region.

In addition to preventing wildfires, these restrictions also aim to keep air quality as smoke-free as possible. Breathing in smoke can have harmful effects on the respiratory system, especially for young children, elderly individuals, and those with heart or respiratory conditions.

To ensure a safe summer season without any unplanned fires or smoke risks, officials are encouraging everyone to follow some simple guidelines. These include refraining from recreational fires such as backyard fire pits or campfires using chopped firewood or charcoal. Open burning of fields and yard waste is also prohibited at all times.

However, manufactured portable outdoor devices such as fireplaces, chimineas, barbeques, and patio warmers can still be used as long as they are used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Approved fuels such as clean and dry seasoned firewood, charcoal, natural gas, or propane gas are also allowed in appropriate devices.

Designated campfires in parks and campgrounds may also be allowed with approval from the relevant agencies. It is important to note that anyone found violating these restrictions may face misdemeanor charges.

For more information on burn restrictions, residents can contact their local agencies such as the City of Airway Heights, City of Deer Park, City of Spokane Fire Department, Spokane Clean Air, Spokane County, SVFD, and Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

As the summer season progresses, it is crucial for everyone to do their part in preventing wildfires and keeping the community safe. By following these guidelines and staying informed about burn restrictions, we can all enjoy a fire and smoke-free summer.
