Spokane: Traffic Impacts Starting Monday, March 30

~ Spokane, WA - The City of Spokane's 2026 construction season has officially begun with three major projects set to impact traffic starting Monday, March 30. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for extra time, and be aware of frequent traffic changes. The city's Communications Manager, Kirstin Davis, urges drivers to slow down for everyone's safety and make an extra effort to support local businesses affected by the necessary construction.

This year's construction work includes a combination of projects aimed at maintaining and improving utility infrastructure, upgrading street surfaces, implementing new traffic configurations, and enhancing sidewalk and pedestrian routes. One of the major projects taking place is the $3 million reconstruction of East Sprague Avenue between Freya Street and Havana Street. This project involves replacing a water main, upgrading ADA ramps, improving stormwater management, and resurfacing the street with a grind and overlay. Starting on Monday, March 30, crews will be working in the curb lanes and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. However, access to businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. The work is expected to be completed by mid-June.

Drivers can expect lane reductions and congestion in both directions between Haven Street and Fancher Road during this project. Local businesses will remain open during this time and motorists are encouraged to make an extra effort to support them during this challenging period. It is also important for drivers to slow down for everyone's safety and remain alert while traveling through this area. Considering an alternative route may also help alleviate some of the traffic congestion.

Another significant project that begins on Monday is the full reconstruction of East Wellesley Avenue between Freya Street and Havana Street. This $4.5 million project includes stormwater improvements, street trees, replacing the water distribution main, and installing a shared use path on the south side of Wellesley. As a result, Wellesley Avenue will be closed to through traffic in both directions. However, local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. Eastbound drivers will be detoured at Market Street north to Francis Avenue, east to Havana Street, and then south to Wellesley Avenue. Westbound drivers will be detoured at Havana Street, north to Francis Avenue, west to Freya Street, and then south to Wellesley Avenue. Drivers are advised to allow for extra time or consider using an alternative route during this project, which is expected to be completed by the end of July.

The final project set to begin on Monday is the $3.3 million enhancement of water, sewer, stormwater, and street infrastructure in the Northwest Terrace area at West Francis Avenue/9 Mile Road and Rifle Club Road. This project is a continuation from 2025 and aims to improve water reliability and support future growth in the area. Southbound 9 Mile Road will be reduced to one lane between Wind River Road and Rifle Club Road during peak travel times causing potential slowdowns. However, northbound 9 Mile Road will maintain two lanes of traffic throughout the area. Access to Wind River Road and Rifle Club Road will also be maintained during this project. Pedestrians are advised that 9 Mile Road will be closed for their safety.
